HTC Wildfire S
No company is taking the mid range smartphone race easily. Each company is putting up some phones from their line up in the mid range. Sony Ericsson have recently declared about their new mini line up phones. Samsung and LG have always been releasing phones in that range. HTC did it a year ago with its Wildfire, but now it is time for the change and that is why we have HTC Wildfire S. HTC are very much aware that the buyers are looking for most of the features in their small budget and that is what the HTC Wildfire S is here to give them. HTC have really done their homework this time. Taking the flaws out of the HTC Wildfire, we have the new HTC Wildfire S. It has been provided a better display, latest version of the Android OS and also the video recording has been improved to VGA which is not that great either. The HTC Wildfire S is worth the money that you put into it and because of the improvements, HTC seem to have finally got the combination right in the mid-range smartphones. While HTC Desire has been updated to HTC Desire S, the Wildfire upgrade is also eminent. The HTC Wildfire S is one those HTC phones that offers full value for the money.
Design, Build and Construction
Losing weight and size could have been one of the things that the engineers at HTC kept in mind while designing the HTC Wildfire S mobile phone. The measurements of the phone are 101.3 x 59.4 x 12.4 mm and that is quite small and compact. The weight of the phone is less and falls around 105 grams. The entire body is made up of plastic and that accounts for the low weight. The phone is great to hold and one hand operation is quite easy because of the small 3.2″inch screen.
Unlike the original Wildfire, the new upgraded HTC Wildfire S has a very simple front and single plastic body. The front of the HTC Wildfire S has the 3.2″inch capacitive touchscreen and below the screen are the four typical Android keys. The capacitive touchscreens from the left are Home, Options, back, search. The right side of the phone is bare and there are absolutely no buttons on the right side. Above the screen is the earpiece. The top has the screen lock ( power button ) on the right side while the 3.5 mm jack occupies the left side. The left side of the phone has the volume rocker towards the top and the uncovered USB port at the bottom. The bottom of the phone has only the mouthpiece. The back of the phone houses the 5MP camera and it is flanked by the LED flash on the right side and the speaker on the left side. Beneath the back cover is the 1230 mAh battery and underneath the battery is the SIM card slot. The microSD card is hot swappable.
The overall build of the phone is great. Though the phone is made of plastic, the feel of the HTC Wildfire S is quite good. Despite its miniature size, the solid phone has great features. The back of the HTC Wildfire S is quite good and the soft matt plastic is impressive. Despite losing the Aluminium body, the solid look and feel of the phone is not lost. With a wide color range, the phone is expected to satisfy the customers of all ages.

Features and Specifications
The HTC Wildfire S runs on the Android 600 MHz processor. Though the processor is quite a normal one, it has been provided with enormous amount of RAM (512MB) and also the internal storage has been expanded to 512MB which is great. The display is where HTC have worked it hard when compared to the original Wildfire. The screen has been made into a HVGA screen with a resolution of 320×480 pixels on a 3.2″inch screen. The brightness and color of the screen are quite good and that is a big improvement over the original Wildfire. As expected, the capacitive touch response is great.
Android and HTC Sense UI
The HTC Wildfire S is running on the latest version of the Google Android OS – Gingerbread. Like a typical Android phone from HTC, the UI is based on HTC Sense UI. It is not the same Sense UI, but not the Sense 3.0 either. It is somewhere between the old one and new one. The user interface is quite amazing and that never ceases to amaze anyone using it. The leap view is just great and it provides a quick look of all the homescreens in an instant. The concept of Scenes is what makes the UI more appealing. The Android OS boosts the performance of the HTC Wildfire S and with the Android Market, one can always get any type of apps.
The HTC Wildfire S has the same camera as the original Wildfire. There is an LED flash too and it can also double as a video light. The camera is quite good and is capable of producing images with a resolution of 2592×1952. The camera UI is improved and most of the options are kept on the right side for better use of the screen. The Autofocus feature is great and it comes into use because there is no physical camera key. The image quality is not like the one you can expect from a 5MP camera. The color is good, but the contrast is missing and though the noise is low, the detailing is also low. The biggest improvement in the HTC Wildfire S over the original Wildfire is the improved video recording. Now the HTC Wildfire S is capable of recording VGA videos at 24fps.
The music of the HTC Wildfire S is great. The tabbed music player is great for selecting and hearing songs. The audio output is impressive and the earphones that come with the phone perfectly complement the music qualities of the phone. The music player has got a lot of eye candy to attract people. The now playing is a cover flow based and that is great fun. The inbuilt radio app is great and comes with RDS. The video player is impressive too as it has abilities to play DivX videos right out of the box. There is no support for subtitles as yet. The image gallery is not the regular 3D gallery that we see in Froyo running phones. The image gallery is quite simple and has list with thumbnails. The image gallery has great options for sharing in social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Many user reviews have stated that the gallery is quite fast and simple.
The HTC Wildfire S has perfect connectivity options. It has everything that one would want in a smartphone. It has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G and GPS with A-GPS. The version of the Bluetooth is 3.0, but the transfer speeds are not that great. The web browser is quite good because of its simplicity. Most of the UI is kept behind the screens so as to display the page fully. The pinch and double tap zooming is great to read longer text. There is no full Flash support because of the incapable processor and so there is support for Flash which should make some sites with flash content work.
