Samsung Galaxy S
Samsung has surely been a leader in the smartphone industry for the past year and the main credits should go to Android and its flagship model – Samsung Galaxy S. Ever since the Samsung Galaxy S was released, we have seen a number of phones with its characteristics being released, but none have been even close. Though the phone had been released a year ago, the phone is still a feared one among the top notch smartphones. Lets see what this beauty packs.
Samsung Galaxy S – Design, Construction and Build
The Samsung Galaxy S is a solidly built plastic phone. A screen size of 4″inch means that the phone is small in no means and it fits very well in a hand. The dimensions of the phone are 122.4 x 64.2 x 9.9 mm which is quite thin for a smartphone of its features. The low weight of the phone – 119 grams is a result of the plastic body. The phone should be quite comfortable to slip into any pocket size.
The front of the phone has the iPhonish looks imprinted all over it though Samsung claims that it is not so. On top of the front, there is the ear piece to the right of which we find the ambient sensor for automatic brightness. Below the earpiece is the amazing Super AMOLED Screen. Below the screen are three keys out of which the center key is the physical key and it is flanked by two touch sensitive keys, one for the options and the other for the back key. The physical key is for the menu. The right side of the phone has only one key for the screen lock. The top side of the phone has a miniUSB port which is covered and also there is the 3.5mm jack. The left side of the phone has the volume rocker. The bottom of the phone has the mouth piece. The back of Samsung Galaxy S has the 5MP camera without the flash and there is a speaker on the right side of the camera. Beneath the battery cover is the 1500mAh and the micro SD card slot is hot swappable.
The overall build quality of the phone is quite amazing despite the plastic body. The back of the Samsung Galaxy S is what will concern a few people because of the dotted finish. Another matter of concern is not the plastic finish, but its scratch prone nature. The plastic body of Samsung Galaxy S is a real fingerprint magnet.
Samsung Galaxy S – Features and Specifications
Being a top notch phone, the Samsung Galaxy S is surely not a loser on the specifications side. The Samsung Galaxy S is well equipped with a 1GHZ ARM 8 processor and also 512MB RAM. There is also the 2GB ROM, 8/16GB Internal Storage and micro SD card support to 32GB. The Samsung Galaxy S also has on board graphics with the PowerVR SGX540 GPU.
The best part of the Samsung Galaxy S is its 4″inch Super AMOLED display. The rich display has excellent colors and great viewing angles. The display of Samsung Galaxy S has great sunlight legibility as well. The display is capable of producing rich colors and also great contrast ratios. The best thing about the Super AMOLED display is its ability to retain the pure black color.
3. Android and Samsung TouchWiz 3.0
The Samsung Galaxy S comes out of the box with Android 2.1 Eclair and the Samsung TouchWiz 3.0 is overlaid on the Android interface. Now there is an update available to the Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This update is said to have greatly improved the battery life along with the browser capacities. Also the Samsung Galaxy S has a very refined version of the TouchWiz launcher.
The music capabilities of the phone are simply awesome. The Samsung Galaxy S comes with a great set of earphones and the music is simply great. The music player is a typical Android music player with lots of options and controls that allow the user to use the player quite easily. The tabbed music player is very easy to organize and flicking through the albums quite easy. The audio quality is seamless and very impressive. The Samsung Galaxy S also has inbuilt music player with RDS. The video player is quite impressive as well. It is capable of playing 720p videos right out of the box. The image gallery is the Vanilla Gallery that we find in most of the Android phones these days. The gallery really seems to be a point of interest for the photo lovers.
The Samsung Galaxy S has a sharp 5MP camera on the back. The maximum resolution of the images is 2592 x 1944 pixels. The camera UI is very similar to the ones that we find on the normal Samsung phones and it is infact good. There are tones of features that one would like to check out in the Samsung Galaxy S camera. There is no camera shutter key and the photos can be captured only by onscreen virtual shutter key. The touch focus is quite amazing and it is very fast. The image quality is not the best that we have seen. There is quite some noise in the images and the clarity is lost in the noise. The camera of Samsung Galaxy S is also capable of recording 720p videos. The videos are recorded at 1280 x 720 p at 30 fps. The videos are quite awesome.
Being a high end phone, the Samsung Galaxy S is surely not devoid of any connectivity features. There are the usual connectivity features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mini USB. The mini USB port allows the users to easily connect it to the laptops and other devices. Also it offers dual band HSPDA offering download speeds of 7.2 Mbps. The default web browser is quite a good one and it has all the necessary features. The Flash support is quite good and it plays Flash videos quite smoothly.
